Abstract: A method for the preparation of biodegradable, thermoplastically processable starches containing side chains bonded via ester linkages, by reacting natural starch in the presence of a catalyst with a compound (A) which can form ester groups with the hydroxy groups in the starch, comprises carrying out the reaction between the starch and (A) in the presence of water and a sterically hindered base.
