Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a chiral 1,3-dioxane compound and a diastereomer thereof, and to use the above compound as a chiral dopant for liquid crystalline system. SOLUTION: This chiral 1,3-dioxane compound is shown by the general formula I. This compound is suitable for producing cholesteric liquid-crystalline compositions, having relatively high torsional ability, and according thereto, exerting significant impact on the optical properties of liquid-crystalline host systems even in relatively small quantities.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the use of a chiral non-charged compound as a doping agent for a liquid crystal material, and such a compound and a liquid crystal material. SOLUTION: This chirality is shown by general formula Ia: [(P1-Y1-A1-Y2-M1- Y3-)nL] 2Me, or general formula Ib: [(P1-Y1-A1-Y2-M1-Y3-)nL]M(L'(-Y6-M2-Y5-A2- Y4-P2)n')m, and used as the doping agent for the liquid crystal material of the non-charged compound. Such a compound is shown by general formula IIIa: [(P1-Y1-A1-Y2-M1-Y3-)L]2Me, or general formula IIIb: [(P1-Y1-A1-Y2-M1-Y3-) L]Me(L'(-Y6-M2-Y5-A2-Y4-P2)n')m, and specifically exemplified by a compound shown by formula IV (wherein, the left-hand O-N-O part is shown by formula V; M is titanium).

((P -Y -A -Y M -Y -)nL)2Me (Ia) ((P -Y -A -Y -M -Y -)nL)Me(L'(-Y -M -Y -A -Y -P )n')m (Ib) P , P = H, 1-12C alkyl, polymerizable groups, groups suitable for polymerization, or residues bearing such polymerizable groups; Y -Y = single bonds, -O-, -S-, -CO-, -COO-, -OCO-, -CONR-, -NRCO-, -OCOO-, -OCONR-, -NRCOO- or -NRCONR-; R = H or 1-4C alkyl; A , A = 1-30C spacer groups; M , M = mesogenic groups; n, n' = 0 or 1; m = 1, 2 or 3; Me = a transition metal of Period 4, 5 or 6 (other than technetium, silver, cadmium, gold, mercury or lanthanides) or a Main Group 14 element (other than carbon or lead); L = a tridentate ligand of formula (II); U, V, W = nitrogen-, phosphorus- or sulfur-containing groups with N, O, P or S atoms with free electron pair(s) for coordination with the central metal atom (Me); b1, b2 = 2-3C alkylene bridges attached to U and V or V and W, optionally substituted with up to two 1-12C organic residues in the case of 2C bridges and up to 4 such residues in other cases, and in which 2 adjacent carbon atoms may form part of an optionally substituted, optionally anellated benzene ring; L' = a 1-12C organic group. Abstract: New liquid crystalline mixtures comprise: (a) difunctional mesogenic compound(s) (I); (b) reactive compound(s);and (c) optionally additives. New liquid crystalline mixtures comprise: (a) at least one difunctional mesogenic compound of formula Z1-Y1-A1-Y3-M-Y4-A2-Y2-Z2 (I); (b) at least one reactive compound selected from (i) vinyl or allyl ethers, (ii) vinyl or allyl esters of (un)saturated carboxylic acids, (iii) (meth)acrylate esters of mono- or polyfunctional alcohols, (iv) polyester (meth)acrylates, (v) vinyl (hetero)aromatic compounds, and (vi) N-vinyl amide or amine compounds of formula CH2=CH-NR1R2 (II); and (c) optionally further additives.
