The conical obturating member 7 has a lower stem-portion 5 with a head member 12 engaged in a recess 31 in an upper stem portion 13 threaded into a gland element 17 which is screwed into the body 1 and retained by a locknut 18. The stem portion 5 passes through packing 6 which latter is supported on bushes 14, 15 and forced into contact with the body 1 by the element 17 via an intermediate member 16. A nut 25 securing the stem portion 13 to an operating wheel 22 is covered by a ring 26 of synthetic plastic material, e.g. P.V.C. polystyrene or polyethylene. The top 30 of the body 1, a bonnet 27 and the upper part of the gland 17 are of hexagonal shape; the bonnet 27 embodies a port 29 to permit escape of gas leaking past the packing 6. The lower end of the body 1 has a threaded conical-portion for screwing into a gas cylinder. The packing 6 consists of pre-stressed self-lubricating rings; the lubricant may be graphite, P.T.F.E., chlorinated paraffins, molybdenum disulphide or P.T.F.E. impregnated with the latter.
