    Abstract: Screw extruder for removing gaseous constituents from plastic materials, comprising a screw surrounded by a barrel with a feed opening for the materials to be treated, a drive unit and a degassing device arranged between the feed opening and the drive unit. The degassing device is formed by a stuffing box housing (4), which covers over and seals off the screw (2), is connected positively and non-positively to the barrel (1) and has on its inner wall (6), on the side facing the barrel, a spiral groove (7) running counter to the cut of the screw, and adjoining the said spiral groove an eccentric annular chamber which has one or more openings. The said screw extruder is characterised in that a defined amount of paraffin oil is pumped into the spiral groove of the degassing ring.

    Abstract: Continuous high pressure polymerisation systems for ethylene (co)polymerisation operate at 500-5000 bar and 150-400 deg.C and the unreacted gas is recycled to the polymerisation system through the high pressure recirculation system after relieving the pressure to 200-400 bar. If given pressure and/or temp. limits are exceeded or other difficulties occur, the pressure is relieved rapidly to a value below the polymerisation pressure by opening valve(s) and passing the hot reaction mixt. from the polymerisation system through expansion pipe(s) and sepn. system(s) into the atmos. The novelty is that, when the pressure is relieved, the polymerisation system is cut off into several sub-sections at the same time and only the sub-section in which the pressure is relieved into the atmos.

    Abstract: The pressure in a continuous high pressure polymerization system, in which ethylene, with or without comonomers, is polymerized under high pressures and temperatures and the unconverted amounts of gas are recycled through the high pressure recycle gas system into the polymerization system, is rapidly reduced to below the particular reaction pressure when predetermined limiting pressure and/or temperature values are exceeded or when other faults occur by opening one or more pressure-relief apparatuses mounted on the high pressure polymerization system and transferring the hot let-down reaction mixture from the polymerization system via one or more let-down lines through one or more separator systems into the atmosphere, by a process in which the high pressure polymerization system is divided into a plurality of isolated sections at the same time as the let-down process is triggered and only the section in which the let-down process is triggered is let down to the atmosphere. Preferably, the sections in which the let-down process is not triggered can be let down into the high pressure recycle gas system, if necessary through a product separator, in synchronization with triggering of the let-down to the atmosphere.
