Abstract: A process for anodic oxidn. of the surface of sheets, foils or strips of Al or Al alloys in an aq. electrolyte contg. one or more acids and opt. one or more additives, (one of) the additive(s) or (one of) the acid(s) being represented by one or more silanes of formula (I) X (CH2)y Si(R1)n(OR2)3-n (I) in which y = 1-4, n = 0, 1 or 2, R1 and R2 (same or different) = 1-9C alkyl or 6-12 C aryl; and X = a gp. X1-X11: (R6O)2PO- (X6), (Hal)2PO- (X7), ZO3S- (X8), HalO2S- (X9), ZO3S-Ar- (X10) and Hal102S-Ar- (X11) in which R3 = H, 1-9C alkyl, 1-9C alkane carboxylic acid residue or carboxylic acid anhydride ring formed from a 1-9C alkane carboxylic acid residue and a methylenecarboxylic acid gp. HOOC-CO-CH which is linked to R3; R4 and R5 = R1; R6 = H or R1; Z = H or alkali metal cation; Ar = 6-12C arylene and Hal = Cl or Br, the silane of formula (I) being dissolved in the electrolyte soln. in hydrolysed and/or condensed form.
