Abstract: Silage additive comprises a urea-propionic acid solution and is esp. useful for green forage e.g. green maize which (a) gives better and quicker penetration into the forage (b) it is less corrosive than propionic acid and may be transported and stored in containers which are not corrosion resistant (c) it produces high quality silage and preserves it due to the antimicrobial activity of the propionic acid. The concentration of urea in the solution is 25-45 wt. % and water 0-50 wt. %. The solution may contain other lower aliphatic acids such as formic or acetic and/or mineral acids such as phosphoric, sulphuric or hydrochloric and their salts.
