Abstract: A process for the preparation of pyridine acylals of the general formula I in which R and R independently of one another can be hydrogen, C1- to C20-alkyl, C1- to C20-alkoxy, aryl, aryloxy, halogen, amido, carboxyl, cyano, C2- to C20-alkoxycarbonyl, C2- to C12-alkylcarbonyl or together can be a (CH2)p or (CH=CH)q group which is optionally substituted by C1- to C8-alkyl, C1- to C8-alkoxy, aryl, aryloxy, halogen, amido, carboxyl, cyano or C2- to C20-alkoxycarbonyl, where p represents 1 to 10 and q represents 2 to 4, R denotes hydrogen, a C1- to C20-alkyl, C3- to C20-cycloalkyl or aryl, R denotes a C1- to C12-alkyl, m represents 1 or 2, by electrochemically reacting pyridine derivatives of the general formula II in which R , R , R and m have the abovementioned meanings and n represents 0 or 1, with a carboxylic anhydride of the formula (R CO)2O, where R has the abovementioned meanings, in the presence of a transition metal salt.
