Abstract: Catalysts for use in the production of hydrogen by reaction of carbon monoxide or gases containing carbon monoxide with steam are obtained by precipitation of copper oxides, hydroxides, and/or carbonates from solutions of copper salts by means of alkali metal hydroxides or carbonates on to natural or synthetic silicates having an average particle size of less than 100 m , in aqueous suspension at 10 DEG to 90 DEG C., followed by filtration, drying and subsequent reduction at 150 DEG to 250 DEG C. Gases containing carbon monoxide mentioned are cracking gas, coke oven gas, gas from pressure gasification of mineral coal, producer gas. Natural silicates mentioned are clay, kaolin, bleaching earths, bentonite, bolus alba, asbestos, meerschaum; synthetic silicates mentioned are magnesium, calcium, zinc, aluminium silicates. The catalyst may be shaped, e.g. pelleted and may be reduced with gases containing 1 to 20% carbon monoxide and/or hydrogen, which may be the gases to be converted. Chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, vanadium, silver, barium, zinc compounds may be added to the catalyst during the production of the catalysts or subsequently. The reaction may be carried out at atmospheric or superatmospheric presure, e.g. up to 40 atmospheres, and at 110 DEG to 200 DEG C.ALSO:Shift reaction catalysts are obtained by precipitation of copper oxides, hydroxides, and/or carbonates from solutions of copper salts by means of alkali metal hydroxides or carbonates on to natural or synthetic silicates having an average particle size of less than 100m , in aqueous suspension at 10 to 90 DEG C., followed by filtration, drying and subsequent reduction at 150 to 250 DEG C.
