Abstract: A process for converting CO or gases containing CO with steam to CO2 and hydrogen is effected in the presence of a catalyst made from a homogeneous mixture of Fe2O3 and Cr2O3 o particle size 0.1 to 100m and surface area 15 to to 120 m.2/gm. by moulding in a granulator without the use of a binding agent. In an example 1 part of gas containing 12% CO and 88% N2 is passed with 2.1 parts of steam at space velocity of 800 p.p.p.h.over such a catalyst. 45% CO is converted at 300 DEG C. and 83% at 350 DEG C.ALSO:A homogeneous mixture of Fe2O3 and Cr2O3 having a particle size of 0.1 to 100m and an internal surface area of 15 to 120 sq. m./gm. is moulded with water in a granulator without adding a binding agent to form globules of oxidation catalyst. Alternatively Fe2O3 particles of the same size may be moulded with an aqueous solution of a themally decomposable chromium compound. Additionally the catalysts may contain Cu or Mg compounds. Comparative examples are given in which the reactivation of Fe and Cr containing catalysts is described.

Abstract: 800 parts by volume of a gas containing 12% CO and 88% N2 is mixed with steam in a ratio of 1 : 2.1 and passed under isothermal reaction conditions through 1 part of catalysts made by treating freshly precipitated, filtered and still moist iron carbonate and commercially pure CrO3 with a strong acid in a ratio of 0.1 to 3.0 moles of acid per mole of CrO3, drying and calcining at 200 DEG to 500 DEG C. at a slowly rising temperature, and then shaping by conventional tabletting or pelletizing. The efficacy of this catalyst to convert such gas mixtures to CO2 and H2 at 300 DEG , 320 DEG and 350 DEG C. is compared to that of prior art catalysts.ALSO:Oxidation catalysts comprising Fe2O3 promoted with Cr2O3 are made by mixing FeCO3, CrO3 and a strong acid in a ratio of 0.1 to 3 moles of acid per mole of CrO3, drying and calcining at 200-500 DEG C and shaking the catalyst conventionally. In an example FeSO4 is mixed with Na2CO3, the precipitated FeCO3 is washed, filtered, mixed with CrO3 and HNO3 and dried and calcined.

Abstract: In a process for the catalytic reaction of carbon monoxide with steam to form carbon dioxide and hydrogen the catalyst used consists of (a) one or more oxides or sulphides of metals of Groups V-VII of the Periodic Table, alone or in combination with oxides or sulphides of cobalt and/or nickel, (b) an oxide or silicate carrier other than (a) or (c), and (c) an hydraulic cement as binding agent. Examples describe the reaction of crude conversion gas (containing 32 or 55% CO) with steam at 450 DEG C. and 100 atmospheres.ALSO:A shift reaction catalyst comprises (a) one or more oxides or sulphides of a Group V to VII metal alone or in combination with oxides or sulphides of Co and/or Ni (b) an oxide or silicate carrier and (c) a hydraulic-cement. An example describes the preparation of a Co-Mo-Al2O3 catalyst which has been bound with a commercially available cement, containing calcium aluminate.

Abstract: Catalysts for use in the production of hydrogen by reaction of carbon monoxide or gases containing carbon monoxide with steam are obtained by precipitation of copper oxides, hydroxides, and/or carbonates from solutions of copper salts by means of alkali metal hydroxides or carbonates on to natural or synthetic silicates having an average particle size of less than 100 m , in aqueous suspension at 10 DEG to 90 DEG C., followed by filtration, drying and subsequent reduction at 150 DEG to 250 DEG C. Gases containing carbon monoxide mentioned are cracking gas, coke oven gas, gas from pressure gasification of mineral coal, producer gas. Natural silicates mentioned are clay, kaolin, bleaching earths, bentonite, bolus alba, asbestos, meerschaum; synthetic silicates mentioned are magnesium, calcium, zinc, aluminium silicates. The catalyst may be shaped, e.g. pelleted and may be reduced with gases containing 1 to 20% carbon monoxide and/or hydrogen, which may be the gases to be converted. Chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, vanadium, silver, barium, zinc compounds may be added to the catalyst during the production of the catalysts or subsequently. The reaction may be carried out at atmospheric or superatmospheric presure, e.g. up to 40 atmospheres, and at 110 DEG to 200 DEG C.ALSO:Shift reaction catalysts are obtained by precipitation of copper oxides, hydroxides, and/or carbonates from solutions of copper salts by means of alkali metal hydroxides or carbonates on to natural or synthetic silicates having an average particle size of less than 100m , in aqueous suspension at 10 to 90 DEG C., followed by filtration, drying and subsequent reduction at 150 to 250 DEG C.
