Abstract: In the prodn. of thiophen derivs. (I) of formula: (in which R is 1-17C alkyl, 1-8C alkoxymethyl, cyclohexyl or opt. MeO-, Me-, Cl- or NO2-substd. phenyl; X is CN, CONH2 or Z; Z is carboxylic ester) by reacting cpds. (II) of the formula R-COCH2-Z with cpds. (III) of the formula X-CH2CN and S in the presence of organic bases (IV), the reaction is carried out at first at max. 35 degrees C and then ring closure is effected, after formation of the intermediate (V) of the formula HS-CHZ-CR=CX-CN by heating above 35 degrees C. Z pref. is derived from 1-8C alcohols and phenols, kesp. 1-6C alkanols. (I) are used as diazo components. High yields of light-coloured prods. are obtd.
