A magnetic tape with high abrasion resistance comprises a metallic or plastic base having a coating comprising iron oxide particles incorporated in a copolymer of 60-90% by weight of'styrene and 40-10% by weight of acrylonitrile. This coating may be the uppermost layer of a multilayer tape whose inner layers incorporate conventional binders, e.g. butadiene-acrylonitrile or vinylchloride-vinylacetate. The magnetic particles may be oriented by a magnet. Solvents and emulsifiers are specified. The tape bases may be p.v.c. or a polyester resin.
