    Abstract: The invention relates to the production of homoplymers, copolymers or block copolymers by anionic polymerization of acrylates and/or methacrylates in the presence of an initiator composition containing A) an alkaline organic compound, B) an organic aluminium compound and C) an alkaline cation complexing additive, selected from the group of open-chain ethers with at least two oxygen atoms in the ether function, macrocylic ethers or cryptands or from the group of quaternary cations of general formula (I), wherein A means N, P, As, Sb and R , R , R , R mean individually optionally substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl, whereby two adjacent radicals can form a 5 or 6 link heterocycle with the heteroatom A, which can contain one or two other heteroatoms, selected from the group of nitrogen, oxygen or sulphur atoms.

    Abstract: Cpds. of formula (I) are new, in which m = 1-6; n = 1-1500;R = the residue of a m-functional carbocationic initiator; R = phenyl substd. with R , or naphthyl or phenanthryl; R , R = H, Me, OSiR R R , NO2 or OMe; R , R = Me; R = Me or CMe3; M = alkali metal, 0.5(alkaline earth metal), NR R R R or PR R R R R -R = 1-5C alkyl or Ph. Also claimed are (i) solns. of (I) in organic solvents; (ii) a process for the prodn. of (I); (iii) a process for the anionically initiated polymerisation of ethylenic monomers using (I) as initiator; (iv) copolymers obtd. by this process; (v) copolymers contg. 2-block copolymer segment(s) of formula (VII), in which R = H or Me; R = 1-12C alkyl, H, alkali metal, NH4 and/or (alkyl)4N; k = 1-10 ; (vi) a process for the radical aq. emulsion polymerisation of unsatd. monomers, in which a copolymer (as in iv and v) is added to the reactor before, during and/or after polymerisation.
