Abstract: Finely divided metals, used as catalysts for isomerizing butadiene polymers (see Division C3), are produced by the reduction of compounds of transition metals of groups VI B, VII B and VIII of the Mendeleeff periodic system. In the examples the acetylacetonates of manganese and chromium are reduced with triethyl aluminium, that of ferric iron with diethyl aluminium hydride, diethyl zinc or phenyl lithium, and that of nickel with triethyl aluminium in the presence of triphenyl phosphine, all the reductions being effected under xylene. Further metal compounds and reducing agents are specified. ALSO: Butadiene polymers having a molecular weight of at least 500 and containing isolated carbon-carbon double bonds are isomerized to polymers containing conjugated double bonds by heating to between 100 DEG and 250 DEG C. in the presence of a catalyst containing one or more transition metals of Groups VIb, VIIb and/or VIII of the Mendeleeff Periodic System and/or one or more compounds in which the metals are non-valent. The polybutadienes are obtained by conventional methods, the preferred polymers being oily polybutadienes having a molecular weight between 1000 and 10,000 obtained by the polymerization of butadiene in the presence of nonvalent nickel compounds. Copolymers of butadiene, with, for example, 20% of styrene, may be used. Isomerization catalysts specified are the metals Cr, Mo, W, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Pd and Pt, and many nonvalent metal compounds are also listed. Those exemplified are:Fe(CO)5, CO2(CO)8, bis-cyclooctadiene-(1,5) nickel; the finely divided metals Cr, Fe, Mn, and Ni formed in situ. In the examples the isomerization is effected in xylene solution and the products are oils.
