    Abstract: Aryltin compounds are prepared by reacting a tin compound of formula SnXmYn where X is a mononuclear or dinuclear aryl radical which may be substituted by one or two C1-C4 alkyl radicals, Y is halogen, m is 0, 1, 2 or 3, n is 1, 2, 3 or 4, and m + n is 4, with at least one aryl aluminium compound of formula AlX3, AlX2Y or AlXY2 where X and Y have the meanings given above, at a temperature of between -50 DEG and 200 DEG C. Preferred tin compounds are tin tetrachloride and tin tetrabromide. If desired, tin complexes with ethers, tertiary amines or alkali metal halides may be used: specified are sodium and potassium hexachlorostannates (iv); potassium hexabromostannate (iv); SnBr4(C2H5)2O; SnCl4.CH3OC6H5; SnCl4. (C8H5)2O; SnCl4.2(C5H5)N; SnCl4.2N(C4H9)3; SnCl4.2(C2H5)3N; and SnBr4(CH3)3N. If desired, the aryl aluminium compound may be prepared in situ by heating aluminium dust, powder or grit which has been activated by small amounts of a halogen, hydrogen halide, a metal halide or an organometallic compound, with an aryl halide such as chlorobenzene, bromobenzene, 4-bromotoluene, 3-chloro-4-methyltoluene, 2-chlorotoluene, 4-chlorocumene, a -chloronaphthalene or 4-chlorodiphenyl. This process may be carried out in an inert solvent such as benzene, toluene, xylenes, cyclohexane or n-heptane. In the reaction with the tin compound aluminium halide is produced and this may be removed by complexing with an aromatic or aliphatic ether or thioether, a tertiary amine or an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal halide, thus allowing the desired aryl tin to be recovered by distillation or, in some cases, fractional crystallisation.
