Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new-ligand capable of easily reacting with transition metal compounds to form transition metal complexes useful as catalysts for selective enanthio hydrogenation reactions, isomerization reactions, etc., at low costs. SOLUTION: A new optically active diphosphine ligand of formula I [R is H, a 1-10C acyl, a 1-10C alkyl, a 2-10C alkenyl, a (substituted) aryl, a group of formula II (R -R are each a 1-10C alkyl, an aryl, an arylalkylene), etc.; R , R are each a 1-10C alkyl, a (substituted) aryl, etc.], and its borane adduct. The ligand of formula I can be reacted with a transition metal compound to form a transition metal complex used as a catalyst for selective synthesizing enantiomers, etc. The diphosphine ligand of formula I is obtained by reacting an optically active α,β-unsaturated lactone of formula III as a Michael acceptor with the anion of the compound of the formula: HP(R )2 and subsequently with a compound of the formula: Ha1P(R )2 (Hal is a halogen) and subsequently reducing the carbonyl functional group into ethylene group.

Abstract: Optically active 2-hydroxymethyl-3,4-diphosphino-tetrahydrofuran derivative ligands of formula (I) and their borane adducts are new. R1 = H, 1-10C acyl, 1-10C alkyl or 2-10C alkenyl or aryl or aryl-alkylene (both optionally ring-substituted); or SiR4R5R6; R2-R6 = 1-10C alkyl or aryl or aryl-alkyl (both optionally ring-substituted). Also claimed are: (i) transition metal complexes containing (I) as ligands of formula (IV); and (ii) intermediate diphosphino-lactone ligands of formula (III). M = Co, Ir, Ni, Pd, Pt, Rh or Ru; A = ligand (I); L = organic ligand; D = equivalent of a non-coordinated anion; n = 1 or 2; and p, q = 0-4.
