    Abstract: 1. Carboxyl-containing vinyl chloride copolymers containing copolymerized units of vinyl chloride, diesters of alpha,beta-olefinically unsaturated dicarboxylic acids with monoalkanols and alpha,beta-olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acids or dicarboxylic acid monoesters, the copolymers containing a) 65 to 85 % by weight of copolymerized units of vinyl chloride, b) 15 to 35 % by weight of copolymerized units of at least one diester of an alpha,beta-olefinically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid with monoalkanols of 1 to 10 carbon atoms, and c) 0.3 to 10 % by weight of copolymerized units of at least one copolymerizable alpha,beta-olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid or of at least one monoester of an alpha,beta-olefinically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid with monoalkanols of 1 to 18 carbon atoms with the proviso that the sum of the percentages given in a), b) and c) is 100, and the copolymers having acid numbers of from 3 to 30 and K values of from 40 to 60, characterized in that the copolymers have been obtained by emulsion polymerization in the presence of nonionic emulsifiers and subsequent conventional working up by precipitation and drying.

    Abstract: A binder for a road-marking compsn., contg. 60-90wt.% of >=1 pigment and/or inorganic filler, and 40-10% of the bindeR, is a copolymer of (a) 55-95wt.% of a vinyl-aromatic cpd., (b) 2-20% of >=1 alpha, beta-olefinically unsatd. carboxylic acid, or a semi-ester of an alpha, beta-olefinically unsatd. dicarboxylic acid with a 1-18C mono-alcohol, and (c) 0-30% of >=1 (meth)acrylic ester of a 1-12C mono-alcohol. The binder has high impact and pressure strength. The compsn. has good resistance to abrasion, good bonding to concrete and asphalt, resistance to yellowing on heating, and very high softening point before addn. of plasticisers, but is easily worked after addn. of a plasticiser. It can be applied from the melt at low temp.

A thickener for physically drying paints and coating compositions which are based on binders which are soluble in mineral spirit, wherein the thickener is a copolymer which forms gels in mineral spirit and which contains, as copolymerized units, a) 5-50% by weight of esters of acrylic acid and/or of methacrylic acid with monoalkanols of 8 to 18 carbon atoms, b) 0.01-2% by weight of an olefinically poly-unsaturated organic compound which is copolymerizable with a), from the group acrylic acid esters of dihydric alcohols of 2 to 6 carbon atoms, which may or may not contain ether groups, vinyl ethers of polyhydric alcohols, divinylbenzene, divinyl esters of dicarboxylic acids, diallyl esters of dicarboxylic acids, triallyl isocyanurate and/or reaction products of diisocyanates and polyisocyanates with hydroxyalkyl acrylates, c) 0-60% by weight of styrene and/or vinyltoluene, d) 0-80% by weight of one or more (meth)acrylic acid esters of monoalkanols of 4 to 7 carbon atoms and e) 0-30% by weight of other copolymerizable olefinically unsaturated organic compounds not already listed under a) to d), with the proviso that the sum of the percentages under a) to e) is 100.

    Abstract: 1. A copolymer which consists essentially of polymerized units of a) from 31 to 64% by weight of one or more vinyl-aromatics, b) from 24 to 65% by weight of one or more esters, free from unesterified carboxyl groups, of an alpha,beta-ethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic acid or dicarboxylic acid, of 3 to 5 carbon atoms, with a branched or straight-chain monoalkanol of 1 to 14 carbon atoms, c) from 4 to 30% by weight of one or more carboxyl-containing alpha,beta-ethylenically unsaturated compounds of 3 to 14 carbon atoms, and d) from 0 to 5% by weight of other alpha,beta-ethylenically unsaturated compounds, not mentioned under a) to c) with the proviso that the sum of the percentages mentioned under a) to d) is 100, which copolymer has a K value, determined by the Fikentscher method, of from 18 to 60 and contains components (a), (b), (c) and (d) as polymerized units in such a ratio that the copolymer has an A value of from 180 to 220, which value can be calculated according to the following equation 100 . log SZ + 1,6 . see diagramm : EP0044399,P10,F3 where SZ is the acid number in mg of KOH/g of copolymer and see diagramm : EP0044399,P10,F4 is the sum of the corrected contents E1 -En , each in % by weight based on the copolymer, of COO groups in the particular alkyl (meth)acrylate comonomers b)1 - b)n, these contents in percent by weight being corrected by multiplying them by a factor of 0.7 for esters (b) of alpha-branched alkanols and by a factor of 0.8 for esters (b) of beta-branched alkanols.
