    Abstract: 1. A copolymer which consists essentially of polymerized units of a) from 31 to 64% by weight of one or more vinyl-aromatics, b) from 24 to 65% by weight of one or more esters, free from unesterified carboxyl groups, of an alpha,beta-ethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic acid or dicarboxylic acid, of 3 to 5 carbon atoms, with a branched or straight-chain monoalkanol of 1 to 14 carbon atoms, c) from 4 to 30% by weight of one or more carboxyl-containing alpha,beta-ethylenically unsaturated compounds of 3 to 14 carbon atoms, and d) from 0 to 5% by weight of other alpha,beta-ethylenically unsaturated compounds, not mentioned under a) to c) with the proviso that the sum of the percentages mentioned under a) to d) is 100, which copolymer has a K value, determined by the Fikentscher method, of from 18 to 60 and contains components (a), (b), (c) and (d) as polymerized units in such a ratio that the copolymer has an A value of from 180 to 220, which value can be calculated according to the following equation 100 . log SZ + 1,6 . see diagramm : EP0044399,P10,F3 where SZ is the acid number in mg of KOH/g of copolymer and see diagramm : EP0044399,P10,F4 is the sum of the corrected contents E1 -En , each in % by weight based on the copolymer, of COO groups in the particular alkyl (meth)acrylate comonomers b)1 - b)n, these contents in percent by weight being corrected by multiplying them by a factor of 0.7 for esters (b) of alpha-branched alkanols and by a factor of 0.8 for esters (b) of beta-branched alkanols.

    Abstract: A radiation-curable aqueous binder dispersion which comprises water and, dispersed therein, one or more prepolymers which contain from 0.01 to 1.0 mole of polymerizable carbon-carbon double bonds per 100 g of prepolymer and have a mean molecular weight of not less than 350 and a viscosity at 23 DEG C. of not less than 600 cp, as well as from 0.1 to 30 percent by weight, based on prepolymer, of one or more dispersants and from 0 to 20 percent by weight, based on prepolymer, of one or more photoinitiators.     Abstract: Thickeners are prepd. by copolymerising monomer mixts. contg., by wt., (a) 20-70% (meth)acrylic acid and/or maleic-, fumaric- and/or itaconic acid mono-esters, (b) 30-80% (meth)acrylates and/or vinyl esters of 2-4C monocarboxylic acids, (c) 0-10% (meth)accrylonitrile and/or (meth)acrylamide, (d) 0-30% opt. substd. styrene and (e) 0-2% of >=1 monomer contg. >=2 ethylenically unsatd. double bonds, in an inert solvent, by pptn. polymerisation, using polymerisation initiators. Polymerisation is at 100-150(105-125) degrees C in the presence of 2-10wt.%, w.r.t. monomers, of a C2H4-C3H6 elastomer contg. 10wt.% inter-polymerised no(-conjugated diene. The elastomer has I2-index 1-15 and Mooney viscosity (100 degrees C, ML 1+4), 30-55. The thickeners can be used inthe prepn. of printing pastes, paper coating mixts. and aq. coating compsns. Elastomer presence prevents formation of highly crosslinked copolymers which do not dissolve in aq. alkali solns. In polymerisation, the elastomers act as protective colloids and are built into the copolymer.

    Abstract: Heat-hardening and self-crosslinking aq. coating compsns. contain 20-50wt.% polyacrylate dissolved or dispersed in water, with 20-100% of the free COOH gps. neutralised with amines or NH3 to improve solubility. The polyacrylate is a copolymer of (a) 21-35wt.% hydroxy 2-4C alkyl ester of an alpha, beta-unsatd. carboxylic acid, (b) 15-43% alpha, beta-unsatd. carboxylic acid, and (c) 22-64% monomer free from COOH and OH gps. The compsns. are used, with addn. of other usual additives, as stoving lacquers or metals. Addn. of (C) allows thicker coatings (60-90 mu m) to be applied with blow-holes being formed during stoving, and gives coatings with good gloss, hardness and elasticity.
