Abstract: A molding tool for the production of composite elements comprises lower and upper mold parts (3,4) and first and second sealing rings (1,2), such that a mold cavity (5) bounded by the first sealing ring is formed on closing the mold and the mold cavity is surrounded by an evacuable reduced pressure cavity (6) bounded by the first and second sealing rings. Independent claims are included for: (A) the production of a composite element (A), comprising an outer layer (9) and a polyurethane (PU) foam layer, using the above apparatus, by (a) placing the outer layer in the lower mold part, (b) applying PU system components to the lower layer, (c) closing the second sealing ring (2), (d) evacuating the reduced pressure cavity (6) and the mold cavity (5), (e) allowing the PU system to react, (f) closing the first sealing ring (1), before the reacting PU system can harden in the mold cavity and (g) allowing the PU system to harden, then opening the mold cavity; and (B) the composite elements (A) obtained by the process, provided that the PU system used has a water content of 1-3% (based on the overall weight of the system) and the obtained foam has a mold-foamed density of 80-140 g/l.

Abstract: The polyol component in a low-penetration polyurethane (PUR) reaction mixture used for foam-backing sheet materials comprises a polyol containing dispersed ureas obtained by reacting NH-functional compounds with isocyanates. A process for foam-backing sheet materials with PUR showing a reduced depth of penetration comprises coating porous sheet material with a reaction mixture containing (a) polyisocyanate(s), (b) compound(s) with at least 2 reactive hydrogen atoms, optionally (c) blowing agents, (d) catalysts and (e) other additives etc. and allowing the mixture to react on the substrate. Component (b) is a polyol containing dispersed ureas obtained by reacting NH-functional compounds with isocyanates. An Independent claim is also included for a PUR foam-backing system with a reduced depth of penetration, containing components (a)-(e) as above.
