Sound-damping and energy-absorbing flexible PUR foams are produced by reacting organic and/or modified organic polyisocyanates (a) with a polyetherol mixture (b) and, if desired, further compounds (c) bearing hydrogen atoms which are reactive toward isocyanates, in the presence of water and/or other blowing agents (d), catalysts (e) and, if desired, further auxiliaries and additives (f), wherein the polyetherol mixture (b) comprises b1) at least one bifunctional to eight-functional polyetherol based on propylene oxide and/or butylene oxide and ethylene oxide, where the proportion of ethylene oxide, based on the total amount of alkylene oxide used, is more than 40% by weight, and having an OH number of from 20 to 1000 mg KOH/g and a proportion of primary OH groups of greater than 50%, with the proviso that b1) comprises at least one at least bifunctional polyetherol b1.1) having an OH number of from 20 to 100 mg KOH/g, b2) at least one bifunctional to six-functional polyetherol based on propylene oxide and/or butylene oxide and having an OH number of greater than 30 mg KOH/g and b3) at least one further polyetherol based on ethylene oxide and propylene oxide and having a proportion of primary OH groups of more than 25%, where the component b1) is used in a proportion of more than 30% by weight, based on the total weight of the polyetherol mixture (b). The sound-damping and energy-absorbing PUR foams produced by this process can be used as energy absorbers, damping material and for filling hollow spaces.

Independent claims are included for (i) a process for the production of (I) by reaction of an isocyanate with an isocyanate reactive compound in the presence of a propellant and optionally a catalyst and/or processing aids or additives in a mold in contact with the support (A) followed by removal from the mold and coating with leather or a compact polyisocyanate-polyaddition product, (ii) steering wheels, dashboards and gear levers prepared by the process.

A molding tool for the production of composite elements comprises lower and upper mold parts (3,4) and first and second sealing rings (1,2), such that a mold cavity (5) bounded by the first sealing ring is formed on closing the mold and the mold cavity is surrounded by an evacuable reduced pressure cavity (6) bounded by the first and second sealing rings. Independent claims are included for: (A) the production of a composite element (A), comprising an outer layer (9) and a polyurethane (PU) foam layer, using the above apparatus, by (a) placing the outer layer in the lower mold part, (b) applying PU system components to the lower layer, (c) closing the second sealing ring (2), (d) evacuating the reduced pressure cavity (6) and the mold cavity (5), (e) allowing the PU system to react, (f) closing the first sealing ring (1), before the reacting PU system can harden in the mold cavity and (g) allowing the PU system to harden, then opening the mold cavity; and (B) the composite elements (A) obtained by the process, provided that the PU system used has a water content of 1-3% (based on the overall weight of the system) and the obtained foam has a mold-foamed density of 80-140 g/l.

A process for the production of polyurethane foams comprises reaction of polyisocyanates with a mixture of polyether alcohols and polyester alcohols in a ratio of polyether alcohol to polyester alcohol of greater than 1.5 in the presence of propellant and catalyst. A process for the production of polyurethane foams (I) comprises reaction of (A) polyisocyanates with (B) compounds having at least 2 isocyanate reactive hydrogen atoms in the presence of (C) propellant and (D) catalyst whereby (B) comprises a mixture of (B1) polyether alcohols (B2) polyester alcohols in a ratio of (B1)/(B2) of greater than 1.5 whereby (B1) comprises a polyether alcohol (B11) based on propylene oxide and ethylene oxide having an ethylene oxide end block and a polyether alcohol (B12) based on propylene oxide and (B2) comprises a polyether alcohol (B21) having a secondary OH-group content of greater than 70% and/or a polyester alcohol (B22) having methyl side chains. An Independent claim is included for flexible polyurethane foam prepared using the process.
