Abstract: Aminoethane sulphonic acids of formula:- where R1 is H or aliphatic are prepd by reaction of (I) ethionic anhydride at 60-160 pref. 70-150 degrees C with a mixture of alkali metal/alkaline earth derivatives (oxides, hydroxide, carbonates) and water at pH >=9, (2) reaction with ammonia or an amine:- above the critical temp. of (I) (200-380 degrees C). The process gives better yields with fewer by-products.
