Abstract: The invention relates to a method for separating a C4 hydrocarbon mixture containing essentially 1,3 butadiene, butenes, butanes and other C4 hydrocarbons into at least 4 fractions as follows: a) fraction (a) consisting essentially of 1,3 butadiene; b) fraction (b) consisting essentially of butenes; c) fraction (c) consisting essentially of butanes; and d) one or more fractions (d) consisting essentially of 1,3 butadiene and the other C4 hydrocarbons. According to said method, the C 4 hydrocarbon mixture is separated by extractive distillation using N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone or an aqueous solution of N-methyl-2- pyrrolidinone (NMP).
