Abstract: A process for the preparation of insoluble metal complex colorants of the formula (I) where R, R1, R2 and R3 may be identical or different and each is hydrogen, C1-C4-alkyl, C1-C4-alkoxy, chlorine, bromine, trifluoromethyl or phenyl, Me is copper, cobalt or preferably nickel, Z is NH, O or S and A is one equivalent of an anion, by condensing the corresponding 1,3-diiminoisoindoline and thiazolidine derivative in the molar ratio of 1:1 in water, isolating the 1:1 condensation product, reacting the latter with a metal salt MeA2 in an aprotic polar water-miscible solvent and isolating the reaction product. The water-containing press cake of the 1:1 condensation product can be used for the reaction with the metal salt MeA2, in which case the water, together with a part of the solvent, is distilled off during the reaction in which (I) is formed. The process has great economic advantages over the prior art processes.

Abstract: Prodn. of insoluble metal complexes of formula (I) (R, R1, R2, R3=H, 1-4C alkyl or alkoxy, Cl, Br, Cf, or phenyl; M=Cu, Co or esp. Ni; Z is NH, O or S; A -is the equivalent of an anion) comprises reacting the corresp. 1 - imino- 3-(4- imino-5- thiazolidinylidene) isoindoline (II) with a Zn halide in protic solvent. Resulting Zn halide adduct (A) is isolated and reacted with MA2 in strongly polar aprotic solvent. Pref. the protic solvent is 1-15C alkanol, glycol 1-4C alkyl mono ether or esp. water. (I) are pigments for paints and plastics. Use of expensive aprotic solvents such as DMF in the first stage is avoided without loss of pigment quality.
