Abstract: Method for detecting marked mineral oils by treating the marked mineral oil with an extractant comprising water, a solvent and a base comprises using as marker an azo dye of the formula where ring A may be benzofused, m is from 1 to 4, X1 is hydrogen, C1-C4-alkyl, cyano or nitro, X2 is hydrogen, C1-C4-alkyl, cyano, nitro, C1-C4-alkoxy or C1-C16-alkoxycarbonyl, X3 is hydrogen, C1-C4-alkyl, cyano or C1-C16-alkoxycarbonyl, and X4 is hydrogen, hydroxyl, substituted or unsubstituted C1-C8-alkyl, C1-C4-alkoxy, amino, C1-C4-dialkylamino or substituted or unsubstituted C1-C16-monoalkylamino, as solvent a partially or completely water-miscible organic solvent, and as base an alkali or alkaline earth metal hydroxide, an alkali metal carbonate or a quaternary ammonium hydroxide, the use of azo dyes as markers for mineral oils, and novel azo dyes.

Abstract: Disclosed are methine dyes of formula (I), in which K is a carbocyclic or heterocyclic radical, X is nitrogen or a radical of the formula C-Q and Q , Q and Q are hydrogen, optionally substituted C1-C6 alkyl, C3-C8 cycloalkyl, optionally substituted phenyl, C1-C6 alkoxy, benzyloxy, optionally substituted phenoxy, C1-C6 alkylthio, halogen, cyano, formylamino or a radical of the formula R , -CO-OR , -CO-NHR , -CO-NH-CO-R , -CO-NH-CO-R -, -CO-NH-SO2R , -NH-CO-R , -NH-CO-OR , -NH-CO-NR R , NH-CS-OR , -NH-CS-NR R , -NH-CO-R , -NH-SO2-R , -NH-SO2-R or -NH-SO2-NR R , wherein R and R stand for optionally substituted C1-C13 alkyl, C3-C8 cycloalkyl, optionally substituted phenyl or -NR R also for amino and R stands for a heterocyclic radical, or Q and Q together with the carbon atoms to which they are linked constitute a carbocyclic or heterocyclic ring, with the proviso that at least one of the radicals Q , Q or Q is formylamino. Disclosed also is a method for their thermal transfer.
