[Also in Division C3] A lacquer or wire enamel composes a solution of (a) a crosslinkable polyamide prepared from bicyclo-(2,2,2)-octene-7-tetra carboxylic acid-2;3,5,6 and/or the dianhydride and 0.8 to 1.2 moles per mole of acid or anhydride of a primary aromatic diamune bearing at least one carboxyl, carboxylic ester or hydroxyalkyl group and (b) as crosslinking agent a compound having at least 2 functional groups which will react with carboxyl, carboxylic ester or hydroxyalkyl groups. The intrinsic viscosity of the solutions may be 0.2 to 0.6 ccm/g. In Example 4 7,8-diphenyl-bicyclo-(2,2,2)-octene- 7-tetracarboxylic acid-2,3,5,6-dianhydride is condensed with 4,41-diaminodiphenyl ether and 3,3 1 -dicarboxy-4,4 1 -diaminodiphenyl-methane in cresol. Pentaerythritol is added to the product which is applied to metal sheet and heat cured.

In examples glass and steel are coated with polymers prepared from bicyclo - 2,2,2 - octene - 7 - tetracarboxylic acid, and 4,4' - diamino - diphenylmethane (1) and 7, 8 - diphenyibi - cyclo - 2,2,2 - octene - 7 - tetracarboxylic acid and 4,4' - diamino - diphenylether (5). Cresol is used as solvent.
