Abstract: Reactive amide-containing polymers (I). Reactive polymers of formula (I) are new L-(-Z -OCNH-A(-NHCO-Z -B-XY)n)m (I) L = polymer, free of urethane groups and with number average molecular weight at least 300, or any linear or branched sequences of two or more such polymers; A = optionally unsaturated 2-12C alkylene, cycloalkylene, 3-18C arylene or 7-18C arylenealkylene (all optionally substituted) or a heterocyclic group, or any branched or linear combination of them; Z and Z = NR, sulfur or oxygen; R = hydrogen, methyl, optionally unsaturated 2-12C alkyl, cycloalkyl, or 3-18C aryl (all optionally substituted), or any branched or linear combination of them; B = bond, methylene, or alkylene, cycloalkylene or arylene, or their combinations, as above; n = 1-20; m = 1-50; XY = a group unreactive with isocyanato groups from which the protecting group Y can be removed, under acidic, neutral or basic conditions, to produce a group containing at least two groups reactive with isocyanato . Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) method for preparing (I); (b) polymers (II) with at least two urethane or urea groups and, based on these groups, twice the number of functional groups reactive with isocyanato, produced by hydrolysis of (I); (c) polyaddition and polycondensation products prepared from (II); and (d) method for doubling the number of groups reactive with isocyanato in a urethane-free polymer.

Abstract: Water-emulsifiable polyisocyanates (I) comprise: (A) (cyclo)aliphatic or aromatic polyisocyanates; and (B) reaction prods. contg. at least one reactive NCO gp. and made by reacting (A) with polyvinyl pyrrolidones (PVP's). Pref. the PVP content of the (A)+(B) compsn. is 1-20 wt.%. The PVP, which esp. contains one or more NCO- reactive OH gps., is of Mn 400-40000. The (I)-contg. aq. dispersions are based on polyurethanes or radically-polymerised polymers.
