One or more olefinically unsaturated organic compounds are polymerized in an organic solvent with a salt of peroxydisulphuric acid which is soluble in the organic solvent as a polymerization initiator. In the examples acrylonitrile, methyl acrylate and sodium methacryloyloxypropyl sulphonate are copolymerized in dimethyl formamide using one of the following as initiator:-bis - (n - butylammonium)-, bis-(benzylammonium)-, bis-(dimethylammonium)-, bis-(n-propylammonium)-, bis- (N - methyl - N - cyclohexylammonium)-, bis- (tert. - butylammonium)-, bis - (tri - 2 - hydroxyethylammonium)-, bis - (morpholino)-, bis - (pyridinium)-, bis - (pyrrolidinium)-, and bis - (N - methyl - N - benzylammonium) - peroxydisulphate.
