Abstract: Aqueous titanium(III) chloride solutions are produced by cathodic reduction of titanium(IV) chloride solutions in cells in which the catholyte and anolyte are separated from one another. The cathodes used are graphite electrodes whose surface is coated with borides, silicides, carbides, nitrides and/or oxides of titanium, tungsten, zirconium, tantalum, niobium and/or hafnium.

Abstract: Bipolar electrodes having graphite as support are furnished with a layer of chromium trioxide on both the anode side and the cathode side. The chromium trioxide layer has a layer thickness of at least 10 mu m. The electrodes are produced by plasma spraying of pulverulent chromium trioxide onto a graphite support body. The electrodes can be used as bipolar electrodes in cells for the electrolysis of alkali metal chlorides.

Abstract: In an electrode suitable for electrolysis of aqueous sodium chloride or potassium chloride solutions, at least the outer layer contains spinels, specifically a mixture of the individual spinels of iron and of cobalt, the weight ratio of iron spinels: cobalt spinels being from 30:70 to 90:10. The electrodes are produced by applying a powder mixture of iron spinel and cobalt spinel to a substrate by a plasma spraying process wherein argon is used as the plasma gas and the spraying energy is from 6 to 30 kW.
