Abstract: Prodn. of 3,4,6-trichlorophthalimide (I) comprises treatment of 3,4,5,6-tetrachlorocyclohexadiene-1,2-dicarboxylic acid ester (II) with a base at up to 200 degrees C to give a 3,4,6-trichlorophthalate ester (III). This is then reacted at 100-200 degrees C with cpds. which release NH3 under the reaction conditions. (II) is esp. the dimethyl ester. (I) is an intermediate for pesticides, fungicides, pharmaceuticals, dyes and plastics processing auxiliaries. Provides simple method giving high yields without prodn. of byprods. or isomers.

Abstract: Prodn. of 3,4,6-trichlorophthalic anhydride (I) comprises treating a 3,4,5,6-tetrachlorocyclohexadiene-1,2-dicarboxylic acid ester (II) with a base at up to 200 degrees C to give a 3,4,6-trichlorophthalate ester (III). (III) is then saponified conventionally to the diacid and this converted to (I) by heating. Esp. (II) is the dimethyl ester. (I) is an intermediate for pesticides, fungicides, pharmaceuticals, dyes and plastics processing additives. Simple process gives high yields without formation of by-prods. or isomers.

Abstract: In the prepn. of naphthoquinone derivs. of formula (I), a 1-naphthol derivs. of formula (II) is treated with a cerium IV salt in the presence of water at up to 100 degrees C: In the formulae, R1-4 are H, halogen, 1-4C alkyl, COOM, SO3H, CN or acyl, and R3 and R4 can also be 1-3C alkoxy or NO2; and X is H, 1-4C alkyl, phenyl, OCH3, OC2H5, a group -NR5R6 (in which R5 and R6 are H or 1-4C alkyl and R6 can also be phenyl) or a gp. of formula (III). (I) are useful as intermediates for vitamins and dyestuffs. They are also useful as intermediates for anthraquinones (c.f. Chem. Eng. 1978, 18, 74C). (I) are obtd. smoothly and in high space-time yields.

Abstract: Prodn. of 1-amino-4-alkoxynaphthalenes (I) comprises electrolytic redn. of a 4-unsubstd.-1-nitronapthalene (II) at up to 100 degrees C in presence of an aliphatic alcohol and of H2SO4, methoxysulphuric acid or methanesulphonic acid of >=50% concn. Esp. the electrolyte comprises (wt.%) 0.5-15% (II); 5-35% of >=70 wt.% H2SO4; 50-94.5% alcohol (esp. (m)ethanol or propanol) and 0-30% of a non-aqs. solvent. Results in high yields with reduced by-prod. formation and energy consumption. (I) are prepd. in a single step c.f. 3-step prodn. from alpha-naphthol.
