    Abstract: PURPOSE: To provide a method for improving paper characteristics, e.g. those related to bleeding and whiteness, by coating it with an aqueous coating agent composed of a finely divided pigment, a cationic aqueous polymer dispersion as a sizing agent, and a surfactant and/or polymeric dispersant. CONSTITUTION: This method comprises by preparing a mixture of (A) 100 pts.wt. of a finely divided pigment, (B) 5 to 70 pts.wt., based on solids, of a cationic aqueous polymer dispersion as a sizing agent, having a glass transition temperature of 5 to 80 deg.C, and (C) 0.01 to 10 pts.wt. of a surfactant which interferes with the formation of the surface size and/or a polymeric dispersant; coating paper with the above mixture as an aqueous coating solution to a thickness of 0.5 to 4 g/m ; and drying the coated paper. The component A is preferably of calcium carbonate having a particle size of 2 μm or less for up to 87% of the particles. The preferable compounds for the component C include sodium lauryl sulfonate.
