    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable the simple and accurate identification of particles in a sample during centrifugation by irradiating the sample under the action of centrifugal force with laser light, evaluating the spectrum of an inelastic scattering light part of reflected scattering light, and measuring the characteristic amount of matter. SOLUTION: A sample characteristics displaying device is provided with a rotor 1 with a rotating shaft 2, and cells 3 and 4 with empty chambers to hold samples are provided for the grooves of the rotor 1. A laser light source 5 irradiates the cell 4, and a detecting device 6 identifies and stores the spectrum of reflected scattering light from the sample 4. The other light source 9 irradiates the cell 3 via notch filter 10. A detecting device 11 analyzes the spectrum of reflected scattering light passed through the notch filter 10. The laser light source 5, the detecting device 6, the light source 9, and the detecting device 11 can be synchronously moved radially along arrows 7a and 12a and vertically along arrows 7b and 12b. The detecting devices 6 and 11 transmit numerical values to an evaluating device 8.

    Abstract: Method characterises samples (Si), especially those containing dissolved and/or suspended matter. It identifies the material, determining one or more of its characteristic values (Gji). The following stages are carried out: (a) the sample is centrifuged in an analytical centrifuge; (b) monochromatic light, preferably laser light, is directed into the sample; (c) light scattered from the sample is detected; (d) the substance(s) (Si) are identified by spectral evaluation of the inelastically-scattered fraction of the light detected; and (e) characteristic values (Gji) of the sample (Si) are determined by evaluation of its state as a result of centrifugation (after or during). Also claimed is an apparatus to characterise samples as described.
