    Abstract: A tape transport apparatus in which the take-up and take-off reels are simultaneously driven by surface engagement of a capstan with the outermost tape layer on each reel. The reels are rotatably mounted on carriages which are translationally slidable with a minimum of friction and are urged towards each other by springs to provide substantially equal compressive forces at the two zones of tape engagement. The capstan has little or no resilient material on its peripheral surface to permit tape slippage under the action of a brake which, due to the provision of a unidirectional clutch, is effective only on the supply side of the apparatus. The brake is designed so that the braking torque changes substantially in direct proportion to the distance of the axis of the supply carriage from the capstan periphery. In this fashion the tape tension in the span between the above two zones of tape engagement is maintained virtually constant.

    Abstract: This invention relates to methods or circuit arrangements for compensating time base error in recording systems, particularly video recording systems, by electro-mechanical and electronic means. The circuit arrangements provide for separation of the horizontal synchronizing pulses from the video information contained in a signal coming from a recorded video tape, comparison of the phase of these horizontal synchronizing pulses to the phase of a reference pulse, and adjustment of the frequency of the horizontal synchronizing pulses which go to the video receiver to eliminate time base error.

    Abstract: A video recording technique for recording sequential scenes or segments of video information, such as from a video camera, in such a manner that the recorded scenes may be reproduced without loss of synchronization. In a video tape recorder of the longitudinal type, a recording tape is decelerated to a stop at the end of a scene, and is back-spaced for a preselected time or distance. When the camera is next activated, the tape is accelerated to recording speed, and the camera is quickly synchronized with synchronization signals obtained from the tape, before switching to recording mode to record the next scene.
