Abstract: A tape transport apparatus in which the take-up and take-off reels are simultaneously driven by surface engagement of a capstan with the outermost tape layer on each reel. The reels are rotatably mounted on carriages which are translationally slidable with a minimum of friction and are urged towards each other by springs to provide substantially equal compressive forces at the two zones of tape engagement. The capstan has little or no resilient material on its peripheral surface to permit tape slippage under the action of a brake which, due to the provision of a unidirectional clutch, is effective only on the supply side of the apparatus. The brake is designed so that the braking torque changes substantially in direct proportion to the distance of the axis of the supply carriage from the capstan periphery. In this fashion the tape tension in the span between the above two zones of tape engagement is maintained virtually constant.

Abstract: The cassette consists of a disc shaped plastics container inside which the roll of tape is mounted on a spindle so that it can be withdrawn. The outside of the cassette has a toothed gearing on part of its circumference. The cassette is pushed into the loading mechanism on the playing apparatus, in almost any position so that the gearing on the cassette mates with a small driving geared wheel on the loader. The spindle inside the cassette is now positioned so that it can be driven by the drive spindle on the playing apparatus. The cassette may now be positioned automatically by the driving gear until the leader on the tape engages in a pinchroller mechanism and is automatically loaded.

Removal of the cassette with the tape therein after use is accomplished by the reversal of the above operations.
