Abstract: The process takes place in the gas phase at elevated temp. in the presence of (a gas contg.) O2, in the presence of a catalyst contg. Bi and also Sn, an alkali metal, O and F and pref. in the presence of steam. Esp. useful for the prodn. of CH2:CH(CH2)2CH:CH2 (Ia) from C3H6, (Ia) being converted via Br(CH2)6Br to H2N(CH2)6NH2 and hence an important intermediate for nylon mfr. There is high selectivity for (Ia) from C3H6 with little by-prod. formation and suppression of cyclisation to benzene. Since the main by-prod. is CO2, isolation of (Ia) is simplified. The conversion and space-time yield are high. In an example, 10 ml catalyst contg. 17.0 (wt.)% Bi, 1.1% Sn. 0.6% F, rest Na O and support was used for dehydrodimerisation at 625 degrees C. with 100 Nl/h C3H6, 7Nl/h O2 and 45 Nl/h steam, 7% conversion of C3H6 to 80 mole% (Ia), 3% benzene and 15% CO2 occurred.
