    Abstract: Polyisobutene is prepared by cationic polymerization of isobutene and/or isobutene-containing hydrocarbons in the liquid phase in the presence of a complex of BF3 and at least one cocatalyst which is preferably chosen from oxygen-containing compounds, the BF3/cocatalyst complex being produced in situ by adding BF3 and cocatalyst to a reaction stream, wherein BF3 and oxygen-containing cocatalyst are added to the reaction stream via a common binary nozzle comprising an outlet for BF3 and an outlet for the oxygen-containing cocatalyst. The invention also describes a binary nozzle having a centrally arranged outlet for the catalyst.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the separation of a C4-hydrocarbon mixture which essentially contains n-butenes and butanes. This process is characterized in that the mixture is reacted with a carboxylic acid in the presence of an acidic catalyst to form a butyl carboxylate; the reaction mixture obtained from the esterification zone is distilled to give, as the top product, a fraction containing the butanes, and, as the bottom product, a fraction containing the resulting butyl carboxylate; the butyl carboxylate is decomposed at elevated temperatures to give the carboxylic acid and n-butenes; and the mixture of n-butenes and carboxylic acid is then distilled, the n-butenes being obtained as the top product, and the carboxylic acid as the bottom product. This process permits to use apparatus that are less expensive than those required for the conventional extractive distillation method.

    Abstract: The present invention is concerned with a process for obtaining isobutene from a C4-hydrocarbon mixture containing isobutene, which comprises the steps for reacting the mixture continuously with a primary C3-or C4-alcohol in the presence of an ion exchanger in its acid form as a condensing agent to form the corresponding C3- or C4-alkyl tert-butyl ether by feeding the primary C3- or C4-alcohol and the C4hydrocarbon mixture with or without prior mixing, to an etherification reaction zone which contains the ion exchanger, while maintaining the exit temperature of the reaction mixture from the etherification reaction zone at from 25 to 65.degree.C and the quotient of the volume of the etherification reaction zone and the throughput of the C4-hydrocarbon mixture and the primary C3- or C4-alcohol at from 0.01 to 5 hours; distilling the reaction mixture obtained from the etherification reaction zone in a first distillation zone, taking off as the top product without water washing a C4-hydrocarbon mixture comprising the unconverted hydrocarbons and not more than 1,000 ppm by weight of the primary C3- or C4-alcohol and taking off as the bottom product the resulting C3- or C4alkyl tert-butyl ether, which may contain therein primary C3- or C4-alcohol which may have been added in excess; feeding the bottom product to a second reaction zone, containing an acid catalyst, in which the C3- or C4-alkyl tert-butyl ether is decomposed at an elevated temperature to give isobutene and primary C3- and C4-alcohol; feeding the mixture of isobutene and primary C3- and C4-alcohol produced in the decomposition step to a second distillation zone, taking off as the top product without a water wash isobutene containing not more than 500 ppm by weight of primary C3-or C4alcohol and taking off as the bottom product the remaining primary C3- or C4-alcohol produced in step (c); and recycling the primary C3- or C4-alcohol which is the bottom product of step (d) to the etherification reaction zone.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a continuous method for producing polyisobutene by polymerization of isobutene in the presence of a catalyst from boron trifluoride and at least one cocatalyst in an inert organic solvent. The inventive method comprises the steps of a) discharging, in a continuous manner, a part of the reaction mixture obtained by the polymerization from t he polymerization reactor, b) removing the catalyst from the discharged materia l and/or deactivating it during the discharge, c) removing the solvent and non - reacted isobutene from the discharged material and returning it to the polymerization reactor. The inventive method is further characterized in tha t the returned solvent and optionally the isobutene are first washed with wate r and dried before they are returned to the polymerization reactor.
