    Abstract: Compounds of the axerophthylidene series are obtained by reacting an ester of vitamin A alcohol with (a) a triaryl phosphine and a proton donor or with an acid salt of a triaryl phosphine, and with (b) an oxo compound and a proton acceptor. The proton donor may be an acid which forms a salt with the triaryl phosphine, and the proton acceptor may be an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hydroxide, amide, enolate of a ketone, alcoholate, ammonia, an amine or an organo-metallic compound. The reaction may be carried out at -50 DEG to 100 DEG C. in a solvent. In examples an ester is obtained from vitamin A acetate and palmitate and b -formylcrotonic acid ethyl ester using triphenyl phosphonium hydrogen sulphate, triphenyl phosphine and p-toluenesulphonic acid, triphenyl phosphonium bromide, and triphenyl phosphine and hydrochloric acid, and sodium methylate and methanolic potassium hydroxide; and b -carotene is obtained from vitamin A acetate, triphenyl phosphonium hydrogen sulphate, vitamin A aldehyde and sodium methylate.
