    Abstract: In a process for drying and heating nylon granules, in which the granules flow downwards through a vertical zone, hot inert gases which are free from molecular oxygen are passed in counter-current through the granules and the cooled granules are then intermittently discharged in part-streams, the improvement wherein the wet granules, or a suspension of the granules in water, are fed into the zone at the top, the granules are deposited as a layer, the water is led away, the layer of granules is then transferred into the next-lower part of the zone, the granules are there allowed to flow under gravity downwards through the zone, and inert gases which are free from molecular oxygen are passed in counter-current upwards through the granules at from 70 to 200.degree.C, with the proviso that the inert gas, before leaving the zone, is passed through the deposited layer Or granules, in the lower part of the zone the granules are divided into part-streams over the entire cross-section of the zone, these part-streams are cooled and the granules are passed intermittently, but simultaneously over the entire cross-section or the zone, into a discharge zone, with the proviso that the discharge zone is only partially filled, as well as an apparatus for carrying out the improved process.

    Abstract: Low molecular weight constituents are extracted from a polylactam composition by passing a solvent downward through the composition in particle form at elevated temperature. The polymer which may be in the form of flakes or granules may be derived by polymerization of an o -amino-carboxylic acid or an amide forming derivative thereof. Suitable solvents are those of lower S.G. than the polymer and extractible material e.g. water, MeOH, EtOH and PriOH. The process may be carried out at 70-120 DEG C. and may be continuous, the polymer being raised in counter-current to the falling solvent. In Example (1) the solvent is allowed to flow down a stationary column of polycaprolactam. In Example (2) the apparatus of Fig. 2 is used. Solvent is run down the column and the polymer is raised by removing containers of treated polymer from the top of the column and replacing them by fresh ones inserted at the bottom. In Example (3) the solvent is run down a column of polymer which is raised by supplying fresh polymer at the bottom with a screw feeder and removing treated polymer from the top.

    Abstract: A process for the preparation of acetic acid esters CH3-CO-O-R1 (I, R1=an organic radical other than methyl and ethyl) by alkali-catalyzed trans-esterification of an acetic acid ester CH3-CO-O-R2 (II, R2=methyl or ethyl) with an alcohol R1-OH (III), accompanied by elimination of the alcohol R2-OH (IV), wherein (a) the trans-esterification reaction is carried out in the middle section KM of a distillation column K, the alcohol III being fed as liquid into the upper zone and the ester II into the lower zone of KM, (b) the alkaline catalyst is introduced into the upper part KU of K, (c) the alcohol IV, or a mixture of IV and the ester II, is taken off the top of the column, (d) the mixture obtained from (c) (unless the alcohol IV alone is obtained) is separated in the column section KU or in a stripper column KS into IV and the azeotrope of II and IV, and the latter is recycled to the lower zone of KM, (e) the ester I is taken as vapor or liquid from the lower zone of the lower section KL of K and (f) the catalyst is either removed, or recycled to KU, in a conventional manner.
