(I) are composite materials with high toughness, strength and rigidity, which are cheaper than corresp. materials contg. glass fibre.

Abstract: Porous moulded sheet with density 0.2-0.8 kg/1 (I) is claimed, based on polyolefin (II) reinforced with fibrous mats consisting mainly of vegetable material (III). Also claimed is a process for producing (I), by impregnating (III) with molten (II), compacting under pressure to a density of more than 0.9 kg/1, cooling to below the m.pt. of (II), and then heating the semi-finished sheet to above the m.pt. of (II) without using pressure, to expand the sheet and reduce its density to below 0.8 kg/1. A blowing agent (IV) is added to (II) or (III) before impregnation. (I) contains 20-70 wt.% (III) in the form of needled mat based on sisal, coconut or banana fibres. (II) is polypropylene (PP) with MFI (230/2.16) = 5-500 g/10 mins.. USE/ADVANTAGE - Used for producing sound-absorbing parts for cars by deep-drawing or press-moulding (claimed).
