Abstract: Electrochemical cell has >=1 pair of electrodes. Below it is a plate covering a space with a gas inlet branch and above it is a gas space. The plate is porous, having pore sizes in the range 3-100mu, pref. 10-30 mu. Gas is recirculated round the system to agitate the electrolyte. Used in the electrochemical cells (electrolysis cells or batteries). Cell avoids the formation of dead zones and sludge formation found with most agitation systems.

Abstract: Finely divided, pulverulent carotinoid or retinoid compositions, in which the carotinoid or retinoid essentially has a particle size of less than 0.5 micron, are prepared by a process wherein a carotinoid or retinoid is dissolved in a volatile, water-miscible, organic solvent at from 50 DEG C. to 200 DEG C., if necessary under superatmospheric pressure, within the space of less than 10 seconds. The carotinoid is immediately precipitated, in a colloidally disperse form, from the molecularly disperse solution by rapidly mixing the latter with an aqueous solution of a swellable colloid at from 0 DEG C. to 50 DEG C., and the resulting dispersion is freed from the solvent and the dispersing medium in a conventional manner.

Abstract: Electrochemical cell consists of two parallel disc shaped electrodes mounted inside a frame of insulating material to form an enclosed electrolyte space. The cell is mounted on a horizontal axis and can be rotated about this by a drive wheel contacting it. The cell can be of circular or square cross-section. In the electrolyte space formed by the frame and the electrodes, a further pair of electrodes can be mounted. These are polarised by the two outer electrodes. The chambers in the electrolyte space are connected by channels. The cell has reduced energy and space requirement. Often this is achieved by recirculation through the cell but the problem with this is that the flow pattern is not uniform, gives erosion in some areas and dead spots in others. The cell described avoids this.

Abstract: Prodn. of convection in electrochemical cells is achieved by periodically introducing gas bubbles into the electrolyte at the bottom of the cell and/or introducing electrolyte soln. at the bottom or sides with a pulsation of frequency 0.1-10 Hz and amplitude of 0.1-10 mm. The inlet is connected to a pneumatic or hydraulic pulsator. If a pneumatic pulsator is used, this is connected to the inlet through a valve controlled by a time switch or pressure or a throttle parallel to the valve. The hydraulic pulsator consists of a piston moving in a cylinder. Transport ratios to the electrolyte are the same or better than with the usual methods, at a much lower energy consumption. The inlet is connected to a pneumatic or hydraulic pulsator.
