Abstract: Electrochemical cell has impervious electrode plates mounted in a symmetrical circular fashion forming a closely packed bundle of plates close to or on top of one another. These are spaced by spacers which form an electrolyte space between them, the spacing being 10 mm. The plates are arranged around a hollow rotatable shaft, the hollow space being connected to the electrolyte space and, being attached rigidly to the shaft, rotate with it when it rotates. The bundle can rotate as a whole, or all but the outer now of plates can rotate. Alternatively the plates can alternately rotate and stop. The electrical efficiency is much improved by close packing of the plates. However it can lead to high local current densities with consequent local corrosion of the plates. The centrifugal bundle gives the advantage of close packing but avoids the local corrosion.

Abstract: Electrochemical cell has >=1 pair of electrodes. Below it is a plate covering a space with a gas inlet branch and above it is a gas space. The plate is porous, having pore sizes in the range 3-100mu, pref. 10-30 mu. Gas is recirculated round the system to agitate the electrolyte. Used in the electrochemical cells (electrolysis cells or batteries). Cell avoids the formation of dead zones and sludge formation found with most agitation systems.

Abstract: The positive electrode consists of crystalline graphite, or a plastic which is filled with crystalline graphite, whereas the negative electrode consists of copper, cadmium, and/or zinc. The electrolyte consists of 1-10 molar fluoroboric acid, (HBF4) or perchloric acid. This type of accumulator can be used e.g. for driving electric vehicles; in mains electrically supply networks to compensate for varying loads; or in wind- or solar- energy plants; and an a mperehour yield of ca. 81% can be obtd. Previously the reversible charging of crystalline graphite, e.g. natural graphite, has only been effected in non-aq. electrolytes.

Abstract: Secondary batteries with aqueous acid solutions of lead salts as electrolytes and inert electrode base plates also contain redox systems in solution. These systems have a standard potential of from -0.1 to +1.4 V relative to a standard hydrogen reference electrode, do not form insoluble compounds with the electrolytes and are not oxidized or reduced irreversibly by the active compositions applied to the electrode base plates, within their range of operating potentials.

Abstract: Accumulator has two electrodes of the first type applied to base electrodes, the anode being MnO2 electrode, and the electrolyte being acid and contg. Cl-. The active mass on the cathode side is pref. Zn, Fe, Mn, or Cd, whereas the anode side of the base electrode pref. possesses a porous structure with pore-radii 0.1-2 mm and pore vol. 20-70%. After charging, the electrolyte pref. has a pH value below 1 and, after discharge, a pH below 5. The electrolyte pref. contains min. 0.1 mole/l chloride ions.

Abstract: In a lead-acid accumulator, with aq. acid soln. of Pb salt as electrolyte and inert basic electrodes for the layers of active mass, the positive basic electrode, at least, contains a pigment based on S adn red P or cpds. of these elements which are scarcely soluble in the electrolyte. The additive increases the cycling capacity (lifetime), since smooth layers free fro dendrites and nodules are deposited and these redissolve satisfactorily. Pref. the basic electrode contains 0.01-10 wt.% pigment, esp. BaSO4 and/or tert. Pb phosphate.

Abstract: Electrochemical cell consists of two parallel disc shaped electrodes mounted inside a frame of insulating material to form an enclosed electrolyte space. The cell is mounted on a horizontal axis and can be rotated about this by a drive wheel contacting it. The cell can be of circular or square cross-section. In the electrolyte space formed by the frame and the electrodes, a further pair of electrodes can be mounted. These are polarised by the two outer electrodes. The chambers in the electrolyte space are connected by channels. The cell has reduced energy and space requirement. Often this is achieved by recirculation through the cell but the problem with this is that the flow pattern is not uniform, gives erosion in some areas and dead spots in others. The cell described avoids this.
