Abstract: Production of adiponitrile by introducing adipic acid in solid powder form or in liquid form and simultaneously introducing ammonia into a fluidized bed of a usual catalyst at a temperature of from 250* to 420*C and recovering the adiponitrile from the reaction gases by fractional distillation wherein there is added to the reaction gas before entry into the distillation column sufficient water to make the molar ratio of water vapor to ammonia 0.8 to 1.5 in the mixture entering the column. Adiponitrile is an intermediate in the manufacture of synthetic fibers of, for example, nylon 6.6.

Abstract: Adiponitrile is produced by entraining solid free-flowing adipic acid in a current of ammonia and introducing the mixture, at a temperature of below 50 DEG C., into a fluidized bed of a dehydration catalyst at 250-550 DEG C., the bed being fluidized by ammonia, and the total molar ratio of ammonia to adipic acid being at least 2: 1. Variations of the procedure are described. Suitable catalysts are silica gel, boron phosphate and catalysts containing phosphoric acid, and which may be activated by small amounts of alkali metal oxides.

Abstract: Chloralkylammonium chlorides are prepared by treating a mixture of an alkanolamine (40-86% by weight) and water at elevated temperature e.g. between 150 and 180 DEG C., and pressure in the presence of not more than 40%, based on the reaction mixture, of hydrogen chloride. Ethanolamine, di- and triethanolamines, isopropanolamine, 2-dimethylaminoethanol, 2-methylaminocyclohexanol, 2-phenylethanolamine, 3 - aminopropanol, 4 - aminobutanol and 4-aminocyclohexanol are specified and the reaction may be batchwise or continuous. A dehydration catalyst such as sulphuric or phosphoric acid, zinc chloride or aluminium phosphate may be included. Chloralkylamines may be obtained by the addition of a base. Specification 468,387 is referred to.
