    Abstract: Aqueous dispersions of curable polymers are prepared by initially polymerizing at least monomer selected from acrylic acid esters, methacrylic acid esters, vinyl esters of organic acids, styrene and alkyl-styrenes in aqueous emulsion to a conversion of at least 40% (with reference to all the monomers used in the initial polymerization), then adding 0.2 to 20% by weight (with reference to all the monomers used in the initial polymerization) of one or more polyfunctional allyl compounds, said compounds pounds containing at least one allyl group and, if they contain only one allyl group, at least one other polymerizable group, and continuing the polymerization. Suitable initial monomers include alkyl acrylates and methacrylates containing up to 8 carbon atoms in the alkyl group, cyclohexyl acrylate and methacrylate, vinyl acetate and propionate, styrene, a -methyl styrene and vinyl toluene. Allyl compounds specified are allyl acrylate and methacrylate, diallyl maleate and fumarate, ethylene glycol bis-allyl carbonate, diallyl carbonate and propanediol diallyl ether. Other monomers may additionally be used, for example, esters and amides (including half-esters and half-amides) of maleic and fumaric acids, acrylamide and methacrylamide and their methylol derivatives, N-vinyl lactams such as N-vinyl pyrrolidone, nitriles and acids such as acrylonitrile and acrylic acid, butadiene and isoprene, divinylbenzene, acrylic and methacrylic esters of polyols such as butanediol diacrylate, and divinyl ether. Suitable emulsifiers for the polymerization include sodium alkylbenze-sulphonates, paraffin sulphonic acids, adducts of ethylene oxide with fatty alcohols or phenols; suitable initiators include ammonium and potassium persulphates, azodiisobutyronitrile, di-t.-butyl peroxide and redox catalysts. The various monomers, emulsifier and initiator, may be added to the polymerization mixture in increments. Epoxides, dyes, pigments and fillers, e.g. titanium dioxide, may be incorporated in the polymer dispersions. In an example, the monomers used are methyl methacrylate, 2-ethylhexyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile, acrylic acid and diallyl maleate.ALSO:Aqueous dispersions of polymers derived from (a) acrylic, methacrylic or vinyl esters or styrene or alkyl-styrenes (b) compounds containing at least two polymerizable groups, at least one of which is an alkyl group, e.g. diallyl maleate, and, optionally, (c) other monomers, e.g. acrylonitrile and acrylic acid, are used for coating smooth surfaces such as glass, porcelain and metals (e.g. iron). The coating may be applied by brushing or spraying. Epoxy compounds may be included in the dispersions to promote hardness of the coatings when thermally aftertreated. Other additives include dyes, pigments, and fillers, e.g. titanium dioxide.

    Abstract: An aqueous dispersion of a synthetic resinous copolymer containing an olefinic double linkage contains also 0,05 to 6% by weight of the polymer of a thioether carboxylic acid and/or a water-soluble salt thereof. Specified monomers are butadiene, isoprene, dimethylbutadiene, chloroprene, diallyl phthalate, allyl acrylate, beta-methallyl methacrylate, diallyl maleate or fumarate, butane-diol diacrylate, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, and beta-vinylhydroxyethyl methacrylate. Specified comonomers are styrene, vinyl toluenes, alpha-methylstyrene, the methyl, ethyl, butyl, decyl and cyclohexyl esters of acrylic and methacrylic acids, acrylonitrile, acrylamide, methacrylamide, vinyl acetate, propionate and stearate, vinyl pyrrolidone, vinyl carbazole and vinyl imidazoles, vinyl and vinylidene chlorides, vinyl ethyl and vinyl isobutyl ethers, and vinyl methyl ketone. Specified acids are S-ethyl-, S-propyl-, S-butyl-, S-(betaphenylethyl)-thioglycolic acid, thiodiglycolic acid, thiodibutyric acids, thiodi caprylic and caproic acids, beta-carboxy-beta, beta1-thiodipropionic acid, beta-beta1-dicarboxy-beta-beta1-thiodipropionic acid, ethylmercaptosuccinic acid, S-phenylthioglycolic acid, alpha-phenyl-mercaptopropionic acid, 2-ethyl-mercaptobenzoic acid, diphenylsulphide-2,21-dicarboxylic acid, 4-(cyclohexylmercapto)-benzoic acid, S-(2-benzimidazolyl)-thiodiglycolic acid, ethylene-bis-thioglycolic acid and benzene-1,2-thioglycolic acid. The acids may be added as the ammonium (preferred), alkali, trimethylammonium or pyridinium salts. There may also be present 0,05 to 4%, on the polymer, of monobasic or dibasic carboxylic acids, e.g. formic acetic, propionic, succinic, adipic, maleic, cumaric, crotonic, benzoic or phthalic acids.

    Abstract: Film-forming aqueous polymer dispersions are prepared by polymerizing an ethylenically unsaturated compound in aqueous emulsion in the presence of an emulsifier and of 0,1 to 10% by weight of the monomers of one or more polyvinyl alkyl ethers, which may contain hydrophilic substituents. Ether polymers specified are those of C1-C4 alkyl vinyl ethers, ethylene glycol monovinyl ether, monoethyl diethylene glycol vinyl ether, methyl vinyloxyacetate, vinyloxyethylamine and ureidoethylvinyl ether, and the products containing hydroxyl groups obtained by the partial ether-cleavage of polyvinyl alkyl ethers. Polymerizable monomers specified are styrene, vinyl and vinylidene chlorides, acrylic acid, methyl methacrylate, butyl acrylate, allyl acrylate, butanediol diacrylate, acrylamide, methacrylamide, acrylonitrile, vinyl acetate and propionate and butadiene. Emulsifiers specified are the sodium salts of alkyl benzene and paraffin sulphonates and addition products of ethylene oxide and fatty alcohols or octyl phenol. The reaction medium may also contain catalysts, e.g. persulphates, azodiisobutyronitrile and persulphates + sodium hydrogen sulphite, and dodecyl mercaptan. The examples describe the polymerization of: (1) styrene followed by the polymerization of butadiene in the polystyrene latex thus formed; (2) a mixture of acrylic acid, methyl methacrylate, butyl acrylate and acrylonitrile; (3) vinyl propionate; and (4) a mixture of methyl methacrylate and butyl acrylate.
