Abstract: A polyglycol ether derivative which contains 6-12 ethoxy groups is prepared from an aliphatic alcohol, carboxylic acid, amine or amide which contains 6-14 carbon atoms by reaction with ethylene oxide or a polyglycol ether of the formula HO(CH2-CH2-O)nH wherein n is 6 to 12. Suitable polyglycol ether derivatives are those of dodecyl, octyl, iso-octyl, nonyl and decyl alcohols, dodecylamine, oleylamine, lauric acid amide, lauryl ethanolamide, dodecylamide, iso-octylamine, lauric and undecylenic acids.ALSO:A cough remedy comprises a polyglycol ether derivative containing 6-12 ethoxy groups of an aliphatic alcohol, carboxylic acid, amine or amide which contains from 6-14 carbon atoms (for preparation see Group IV (b)). Specified polyglycol ether derivatives are dodecyl nonaglycol ether and the derivatives of octyl, isooctyl, nonyl, decyl and dodecyl alcohols, dodecylamine, oleylamine, lauric acid amide, iso-octylamine, lauric and undecylenic acids. Examples describe compositions in the form of capsules, tablets, pills, intravenous injections, suppositories and a cough syrup.

Abstract: Products containing polymerized N-vinyl lactams and polyalkylene imines are obtained by allowing a mixture of a polymer which has been prepared from at least one N-vinyl lactam, if desired together with another polymerizable compound, and a polyalkylene imine or a polyalkylene imine derivative to stand in the presence of water or an organic solvent, preferably miscible with water, for some time at room temperature, or by heating said mixture in the presence of water or an organic solvent or by eliminating the solvent by evaporation or in vacuo. The N-vinyl lactam may be N-vinyl pyrrolidone, caprolactam or caprylic lactam, or a methyl or ethyl derivative thereof, and co-monomers which may be used include vinyl chloride, formate, acetate, propionate and iso-propionate, vinylidene chloride, vinyl methyl, ethyl, propyl and isopropyl ether, styrene, acrylic and methacrylic acids, acrylates and methacrylates, acrylonitrile, acrylamide and methacrylamide. The polyalkyleneimine may be polyethylene imine, a modified polyethylene imine obtained by reacting ethylene imine with an amine, or may be in salt form. The organic solvent may be methyl, ethyl, propyl or isopropyl alcohol, a polyglycol ether or glycerine. Compositions suitable for use as stiffening and fixing agents for hair comprise (a) 90 per cent alcohol containing 5 per cent of polyvinyl pyrrolidone and 0.3 to 0.5 per cent polyethylene imine and (b) 17.5 parts by weight of absolute alcohol, 2 parts of a copolymer of equal parts of vinyl pyrrolidone and vinyl propionate, 0.1 part of polyethylene imine, 0.2 part of shellac or a resin prepared from colophony by reaction with an unsaturated carboxylic acid, 0.2 part of perfume and 80 parts of a propellant gas.ALSO:Compositions suitable for use as stiffening and fixing agents for hair comprise (a) 90 per cent alcohol containing 5 per cent of polyvinyl pyrrolidone and 0.3 to 0.5 per cent polyethylene imine; and (b) 17.5 parts by weight of absolute alcohol, 2 parts of a copolymer of equal parts of vinyl pyrrolidone and vinyl propionate, 0.1 part of polyethylene imine, 0.2 part of shellac or a resin prepared from colophony by reaction with an unsaturated carboxylic acid, 0.2 part of perfume and 80 parts of a propellant gas.
