Abstract: Isolated nucleic acids (N1) (all defined and given in the specification) from Corynebacterium glutamicumencoding metabolic pathway proteins (P1), provided that N1 does not consist of any F-designated genes (given in the specification), are new. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a nucleic acid molecule which encodes a naturally occurring allelic variant of P1; (2) a nucleic acid >= 50% homologous to N1; (3) a nucleic acid comprising >= 15 nucleotides of N1; (4) a nucleic acid hybridizing to any of those above; (5) a nucleic acid comprising any of the above sequences and a sequence encoding a heterologous polypeptide; (6) a vector comprising any of the nucleic acids above; (7) a host cell transformed with the vector of (6); (8) a method for producing P1 comprising culturing the cell of (7); (9) an isolated metabolic pathway polypeptide (P1) from Corynebacterium glutamicin; (10) allelic variants of P1; (11) a polypeptide with >= 50% homology to P1; (12) a method (M1) for producing a fine chemical comprising culturing a cell containing the vector of (6); (13) a method (M2) for producing a fine chemical comprising culturing a cell whose genomic DNA has been altered by the inclusion of any of the above nucleic acids; and (14) a method for diagnosing the presence or activity of C. diphtheriaein a subject comprising detecting the presence of N1 (selected from one of 1156 sequences given in the specification).

Vaporous aldehydes are separated from offgas formed in the oxo process, by scrubbing the offgas with an oxonation product boiling above 95 C. and/or a hydrogenated oxonation product boiling above 95 C. Preferably 0À1-2 kg. of the scrubbing material is used per cubic metre of offgas to be scrubbed. Examples recover (a) propionaldehyde by scrubbing the oxo product obtained from ethylene, carbon monoxide and water with a mixture comprising npropanol, para-propionaldehyde and higher boiling condensation products of propionaldehyde, (b) n - butyraldehyde and isobutyraldehyde. Valeraldehyde is also particularly suitable for separation by the method of the invention.
