    Abstract: Preparation of substituted imidazole derivatives of formula (I) comprises reaction of an imidazole of formula (II) with a compound of formula R4OR5 (III) at 200-550 degrees C in the presence of a catalyst containing oxides or phosphates of one or metals of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th main periods and the 4th transition period, optionally in the presence of phosphoric acid or phosphate esters. R1-R3 = H, halo, NO2, CN or 1-20C hydrocarbon (optionally mono- or poly-halogenated); or R1+R2 complete a 3-20C cyclic hydrocarbon optionally containing 1-3 heteroatoms from N, O or S (optionally mono- to poly-substituted by halo or 1-8C alkyl); R4 = 1-20C hydrocarbon (optionally mono- or poly-halogenated); R5 = R4 or H.

    Abstract: A process for the continuous recovery of (meth)acrylic acid from a liquid starting mixture containing (meth)acrylic acid, a high-boiling organic solvent and low boilers, medium boilers and high boilers is proposed, the mixture being separated into a first part-stream (a), which, in addition to (meth)acrylic acid, contains the low boilers and a part each of the medium boilers and high boilers, and a second part-stream (b), which contains the predominant part of the (meth)acrylic acid and is completely or virtually completely free of low boilers, and the (meth)acrylic acid being recovered from the part-stream (b).

    Abstract: The cracking residues of the oxyester-containing sump product which has been obtained after distilling off unreacted materia and the ester in the catalysed esterification of (meth)acrylic acid with an alcohol are combined with the distillation residue a then hydrolysed in the presence of water and acids or bases. Catalysed esterification of (meth)acrylic acid with an alcohol involves distilling off the unreacted materials and the este leave an oxyester-containing sump product which is either: (a) optionally treated with (meth)acrylic acid or oligomeric acid and then cracked using an acid catalyst other than a (meth)acrylic acid or oligomer, with the cracked product removed to leave a cracking residue; or (b) distilled to remove the oxyester and leave a distillation residue, with the oxyester then being optionally treated and cracked as per (a) above. The novel feature is that the cracking residue from (a) or (b) is hydrolysed together with the distillation residue in the presence of water and acids or bases.
