Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the preparation of high-molecular-weight polyphenylene ethers from monohydric phenols by conventional polycondensation in which the polymers obtained are reacted with ss-lactones of the formula (I) in which R , R , R and R may be identical or different and are hydrogen atoms or alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, carboxyl, carboxyalkyl, nitrile or substituted alkyl groups, and/or are reacted with polymeric propiolactones. Particularly suitable lactones are propiolactone, ss,ss-dimethylpropiolactone, alpha , alpha -diphenylpropiolactone or polymeric propiolactone.

Abstract: Air-stable, electrically conductive systems having conductivities greater than 1x10-3 OMEGA -1cm-1 are prepared by reacting a metal cation of an element of sub-group VII, VIII or I of the periodic table with a 1,9-substituted phenalene of the general formula (I) (I) where X is O, NH, S, Se or Te and Y is OH, NH2 or SH, to give a metal chelate, and oxidizing this metal chelate by means of an organic electron acceptor. The electrically conductive systems can be used in the electrical industry for the production of solar cells and for converting and fixing radiation, for producing electric and magnetic switches and electrochemical stores, and for the antistatic treatment of plastics.

Abstract: The invention relates to the preparation of modified polyalkynes, in particular polyacetylenes, having improved resistance and stability to oxygen by polymerising alkynes, in particular acetylene or mixtures of acetylene with other comonomers, by means of active transition-metal catalysts, extracting the polyalkynes with an inert solvent, and modifying the extracted polyalkynes by treatment with halogen-containing free-radical scavengers together with reducing agents. The polyalkynes obtained can be doped with electron acceptors or electron donors to give stable, highly electroconductive systems.
