Abstract: Catalysts (I) with a bimodal pore radius distribution and a BET surface of more than 70 m /g, containing or consisting mainly of (a) 10-99.9 wt% zirconium dioxide, (b) 0-60 wt% aluminum oxide, silicon dioxide and/or titanium dioxide and (c) 0.1-10 wt% Main Group 1 or 2 element(s), Sub-Group 3 element(s), Sub-Group 8 element(s), lanthanum and/or tin. Independent claims are also included for (i) a process for the production of (I) by mixing the catalyst components with 2-30 wt% polyamine, polyacrylate, poly-alcohol, polysiloxane and/or carbohydrate, or especially polyvinylpyrrolidone, and then calcining at above 550 degrees C; (ii) a process for the dehydrogenation of 2-16C hydrocarbons in presence of (I) and optionally in presence of water vapor.

Abstract: A process for hydrolyzing alkyl monohalides comprises using activated carbon impregnated with alkali metal hydroxide or alkaline earth metal hydroxide in the presence of water and converting the alkyl monohalides virtually quantitatively into the corresponding alcohols. Apparatus for carrying out the process comprises at least one, preferably two, especially three, reactors (2), especially tubular reactors. The process is also particularly useful for preparing alcohols.
