Abstract: Catalysts (I) with a bimodal pore radius distribution and a BET surface of more than 70 m /g, containing or consisting mainly of (a) 10-99.9 wt% zirconium dioxide, (b) 0-60 wt% aluminum oxide, silicon dioxide and/or titanium dioxide and (c) 0.1-10 wt% Main Group 1 or 2 element(s), Sub-Group 3 element(s), Sub-Group 8 element(s), lanthanum and/or tin. Independent claims are also included for (i) a process for the production of (I) by mixing the catalyst components with 2-30 wt% polyamine, polyacrylate, poly-alcohol, polysiloxane and/or carbohydrate, or especially polyvinylpyrrolidone, and then calcining at above 550 degrees C; (ii) a process for the dehydrogenation of 2-16C hydrocarbons in presence of (I) and optionally in presence of water vapor.

Abstract: Colloidal palladium for hydrogenating olefins, acetylene, dienes and (un)saturated nitriles consists of palladium clusters having an average particle size of 0.2-2.0 nm. At least 80% of the palladium clusters have a particle diameter which deviates not more than 0.2 nm from the average particle diameter. The clusters have protective ligands on the surface. Independent claims are also included for: (1) production of a palladium colloidal solution by reacting a palladium salt with a reductant made of 4-30 C alcohol, and a protective ligand of phosphane and/or aromatic nitrogen compound at 0-300o C; (2) production of colloidal palladium comprising forming the above palladium colloidal solution, precipitating the colloidal palladium by adding a hydrocarbon solvent, removing the colloidal palladium, and drying; and (3) production of a palladium-containing heterogeneous catalyst by forming the palladium solution as above, impregnating a carrier selected from alumina, silicon dioxide, zirconium dioxide, titanium dioxide, carbon, zeolite and silicate.
