Abstract: A polymer contg. units of the formula (I) is new. The monomer, 1-hydroxy-1-(p-vinylphenyl)-acetone, is prepd. by action of Saccharomyces cerevisae on p-formylstyrene in an aq. medium, opt. contg. a C source and nutrient salts: The polymer form complexes with metal salts and can be used as precursors for pigments. They undergo condensation reactions, e.g. with diamines and hydrazines. They are also used for surface treatment and as antistatics.

Abstract: New optically active polymers contain the structural element of formula (I):- They are prepd. by polymerising 1-hydroxy-(4-vinylphenyl)-acetic acid (also known as p-vinyl-mandelic acid or 1-hydroxy-(4-vinylphenyl)-ethanoic acid), opt. with other unsatd. monomers. The polymers have a mol. wt. of 2000-6,000. The polymers form complexes with metal salts useful as dyestuff pre-products; they can be condensed with diamines and hydrazines. They find use as antistatics.

Abstract: Optically active polymers contain structural units of formula (I) in which R is a (cyclo)alkyl or pinane gp. (I) are made pref. pref. by reacting polymers contg. structural units of formula (II) with H2 and prim. amines. The rotation value of the polymer is dependent on the content of gps. (I). A polymer consisting exclusively of gps. (I) has a rotation alpha 20d = 3.5, C = 2 in n-dibutylether.
