Abstract: 2-Acrylamido-2-alkylsulphonic acids (II) are prepd. by reacting olefins having formula: CH2=CRR1 (I)(where R and R1 are H, 1-20C alkyl or Ph) with excess acrylonitrile at 0 degrees C with addn. of oleum having concn. 10-20%, washing (II) with an inert solvent and drying. Optimum yields are obtd. within given oleum concn. range at 0 plus-or-minus 2 degrees C. E.g., working at 0 degrees C instead of (I) -5 to -7 degrees C, (ii) 4-6 degrees C, improved yields of (II) from (i) 73%, (ii) 75% to 84.5%.

Polymers have dye-affinity, antistatic and surface active props. and can be used for prodn. of moulded articles, coatings or adhesives, opt. mixed with other plastics, e.g. polyethylene, polypropylene or copolymers of vinyl acetate and C2H4, and also for finishing paper and textiles.

Abstract: The linear polyelectrolytes are obtd. by reacting 0.8-1 mol. of a cpd. contg. two functional gps., i.e. acrylic acid chloride, methacrylic acid chloride or p-chloropropionyl chloride, with 1 mol. of a prim. or sec. diamine at -10 degrees C to +150 degrees C, pref. 0-50 degrees C. The polyelectrolytes have a mol. wt. of 500-5000 and are water-soluble. They are useful as modifiers for dispersions, lacquers and sizes and as retention agents and sizes for paper. They can be alkoxylated to give products suitable as anti-static and dressing agents. The polyelectrolytes or their modification products with alkylene oxides can be further modified with alkyl halides such that their hydrophilic properties, swelling power and solubility can be varied widely.

Abstract: Copolymers having N-dialkyl-N-amido gps. are prepd. by reaction of copolymers contg. maleic anhydride (I) units with diamines. The copolymers are prepd. by copolymerisation of (I) and >=1 suitable ethylenically unsatd. comonomer at 130-320 degrees C. The (I) copolymers are reacted with unsymmetrical diamines, H2H-X-NR1R2 (in which R1 and R2 are 1-4C alkyl and X is a straight or branched chain 1-20C alkylene gp. R is 1-10C alkyl, -OMe-, -Cl-, -BR-, -NO2, -CH:CH2 or -CMe: CH2 and n=0-4). The copolymers are used as surface sizing agents for paper, coating materials for paper or textiles binders for non-woven fabrics etc. They are low mol. wt. prods. of homogenous compsn. useful as flocculants, for paper sizing, etc.

Abstract: Optically active polymers (I) contg. 1,6,6-trimethylnorpinanyl-2-methyl or 3-pinanyl-methyl gps. have K values of 20-140 and contain structure units of the formula -CHR-CR1(CONHR")-(in which R is H, COOH or -CONHR", R' is H or ME, and r" is (V) or (VI). (I) are stable towards saponification and can be methylolated easily at the amide gp. They are useful for the prodn of mouldings, impact-resistant compsns., coatings and adhesives, opt. in mixts. with other plastics, e.g. polyethylene, polypropylene or EVA. Their optical activity also makes them useful for finishing paper and textiles and as optical modifiers for films. Their copolymers with acrylic esters, which are soluble, high-mol. and miscible with pigments and can be cross-linked at relatively low temp., are esp. useful as antistatics.

Abstract: A polymer contg. units of the formula (I) is new. The monomer, 1-hydroxy-1-(p-vinylphenyl)-acetone, is prepd. by action of Saccharomyces cerevisae on p-formylstyrene in an aq. medium, opt. contg. a C source and nutrient salts: The polymer form complexes with metal salts and can be used as precursors for pigments. They undergo condensation reactions, e.g. with diamines and hydrazines. They are also used for surface treatment and as antistatics.

Abstract: N-Substd. acrylamides (I) are prepd. by (1) reacting a beta-alkoxypropionic acid 1-4 C alkyl ester (II) with a prim or sec. amine (III) at elevated temps. to give the corresponding N-substd. beta-alkoxypropionic acid amide (IV), and (2) heating the (IV) at 150-180 degrees C to convert it into the (I). The amine (II) is pref. H2NR1-N-R2R3 (V) or (VI) in which R1 is a 1-20C (un)branched alkylene, cycloalkylene or arylene gp. and R2 and R3 =1-4C alkyl gp. The process avids use of toxic acrylyl chloride used in prior art processes and reduces the number of side reactions to give a purer, less discoloured prod. (I) are useful monomers in the prodn. of polymeric materials.
