Abstract: The continuous grafting of NH gp.-contg. cpds. (I) with ethyleneimine (II) in aq. soln. in the presence of catalysts, at temps. of at least 80 deg.C, involves continuously feeding a mixt. of (I), (II) and catalyst at a pressure of at least 0.5 bar into a reaction zone, heating to a temp. at which the grafting reaction will start, passing the exothermic reaction mixt. through a cooled reaction zone in which further reaction occurs at not above 170 deg.C and then releasing the pressure. Pref. (I) are polyamidoamines, polyalkylene-polyamines or polyethyleneimine. Pref. reaction involves heating a mixt. of (I), (II) and catalyst (esp. H2SO4) or p-toluenesulphonic acid) to 90-100 deg.C at 1-20 bar, passing to a second heat exchanger at 100-150 deg.C and then depressurising. Cpds. destroying peroxides (e.g. CuSO4, FeSO4, MnO2) may be added to acidified reaction soln.
